my love, she keeps me warm

I don't consider a story well done or characters drawn well until I can imagine them in Alternate Universes. Let me just say that, and that those Alternate Universes sometimes include their possible futures, but sometimes are just them in new situations. And sometimes those become actual stories.

The other day for example, it occurred to me that Tim and Nathaniel really should be set back in the day, and that they should be a werewolf arranged marriage story. Except that *is* kind of what they are.

Then I read a review of A Boy and His Dragon that asked for Arthur and Bertie's future, and as much as I spin stories of their magical egg (oh yes, that egg needs to get written) and Arthur meeting Bertie's parents, I can't help but think of Bertie and Arthur encountering each other, again, way back in the day. Peasant!Arthur meets fearsome beast!Bertie, and how an earlier version of them would have, er, combusted together much sooner.

I've written or talked about at least two AUs of Charlie and Will. No, wait, three. At least three. It's a problem I have. Especially when I'm not writing and I just keep imagining all these possibilities.

We won't even go into My Man Godric and the futurefic, how I've debated tragedy versus sublimely happy endings a million times. Really for all of them, but especially for Bertie and Godric. There is something delicious and yet reassuring about imagining their pain and then relieving it. (Oh god, what does that say about me?)

I don't know where I am going with this. Except when you guys ask for sequels it kind of chokes me up. Because it's sweet and yet you have no idea. ...

I need an emoticon for a wobbly smile. Because you guys. You guys. :)

I think that any author with some writing chops envisions a much bigger picture than what is shown in a succinct story. I mean, you actually have too. These "AU"s in a way are what lurk in the margins of everything we write. Or it should.

So you do it too? That's so comforting. Kurt Vonnegut said we should hurt our characters, but generally I like to imagine it without ever writing it down. Hmm.

Now I remembered the Will/Charlie epic hospital AU (you know what I'm talking about) and I got all fangirly over it again. Awww.

That one. That one would be beautiful. Sometimes I feel like Will and Charlie are meant to be in a tv show. Some show about Charlie's family or the apartment complex, so they aren't the only focus, but we could see their relationship slowly develop over time. It would be perfect for the hospital AU.

riffing on Bertie & Arthur ...

[identity profile] goestas.livejournal.com 2013-02-26 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's evening here in Berlin and I am just scribbling out my very first ever attempt at fan-fic, a glimpse at a story continuation for our two sweethearts of course, with a prequel stuck on for good measure, or maybe they're the same story doing a sort of temporal donut? (because I couldn't help myself, is why, especially after your latest sweet e-letter to me). Hang on a sec ... *Gasp* it's six in the morning and I have to work today!

The important bits are highlighted in bold. This is the actual Arthur & Bertie episode, after they return from their honeymoon and move in together, (ok, that still needs to get written by someone ... I suggest a lavish cruise to exotic places ... oh, and the wedding ceremony of course ... ), and during the time period that the egg appears. The scene ends with a weird thing happening to Arthur while apparently napping, that completely derails Bertie when he happens to pass by the sofa.

But because they are bits only, and seemed at least to get a little better as I went along, so that they didn't quite fit together in style or mode, I had the bad idea (which is why it it is 6:40 am now) to frame them in a silly meta-story (with some meta-meta-jokes, yikes!) about a future researcher who may be a descendant of the egg, trying to uncover the legendary, lost Second Book of the Arthur and Bertie legend.

Apparently about 3300 years from now, the Albertian's official spirituality is the Church of New Pendragon, its first and principal prophet usually simply known as the Author (who wrote The Book), though she does have a name. But it turns out there was another, much older prophecy ...

I've stuck it HERE (http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1227791-being-s-fanfic) in my GR group for now, if anyone is interested/curious/insanely bored (warning: no editing, very little proofreading, and proudly features a complete lack of literary qualities, plus I didn't even bother to re-read the book to get the tone or characters right ... I couldn't, I just had to WRITE something!)

haha! Well I'm glad you're having fun with them. You sound like you like a lot of adventure. The boys should totally have a fun adventure together. And oh my goodness, The Author who Wrote the Book should go on my resume I think. :)

I hope you don't mind if I don't read it though. It's long been a dream of mine to get fanfiction, (it's honestly just delightful and flattering), but I've also been aware that I just could never bear to read it. (Too many *feelings*) But, me replying to this should unscreen it and make this comment public. And don't mind me, I'm just going to admire it from a distance. :):):)

this is the correct link to my Arthur & Bertie riff, in case the post gets approved. Sorry, I had to change some group settings so people could see it.
